Running on pavement caused me to develop all manner of minor, but painful issues. My feet started hurting, my shins developed splints, and my knees felt like they wanted to give out on me. I’ve told you about the features but that isn’t the same as explaining how the device handles. It is a smoothly operating system that allows for quick changes in programs and the LCD display screen is readable in a clear and decisive manner.

I’ve used it for several hours at a stretch sometimes, on a lower setting while watching television, and the device has held up under the strain of my continual use. There is no pain in my feet, legs, or knees like even normal walking can cause me sometimes. I get a complete workout without the pain and this is one of the best features of the machine as far as I am concerned.

The programs and resistance settings go from ridiculously easy to difficult and challenging in a few easy presses. It would not matter what level the user was at health wise. The Schwinn 420 elliptical trainer can handle it and give them the workout they need and crave.Schwinn Made Me Do It

Despite all the features this elliptical trainer comes with one of the main reasons I chose it over similar models was both the less expensive price, I’m very budget conscious right now, and the Schwinn name. Yes, many people might think less of someone simply for claiming to choose something because of brand name recognition. There is a reason brand names are so recognized usually though. These brand name offerings are well researched and have been tested in the harshest climate of all, user interaction.

Schwinn has been a well known name in cycling and sports equipment for a long time now. They are a well respected company that continually puts out fine quality, high-end, equipment. I feel no shame in admitting that a Schwinn product with a lower price tag compared to the less known and tested models is actually what put me over the edge and made me buy this particular elliptical machine.

Not perfect but a very good machine. Better than a 4-star but not quite a 5-star but I don’t see a half-star option in the ratings. I would make this purchase again.

Note to new buyers: get this where you want it and assemble it there. The Schwinn 460 is very heavy – you won’t want to move it very far.

Pros:

Great workout.

Multiple user profiles.

Saves user-defined workouts.

Fair resistance at higher levels.

Machine is very tall.

After a month of use, now have a squeaking noise coming from bottom right side.

5 Stars Well built machine
This is my second elliptical machine. I basically wore out a standard pro-form elliptical machine and researched many of the new machines on the market. This Schwinn 460 with the variable stride looked to be one of the best. After purchasing and receiving the package.Which is over 200 lbs. Assembly was straightforward and only took about an hour. I am a technician by trade so it may have been easier for me than for some. I have been using the machine for about two weeks now and I am impressed by how well built it is. The variable stride feature adapts to your individual stride length automatically. My wife and I both are using it and would recommend this machine to anyone. It keeps track of two individuals workout history and has different workout programs to keep it interesting. All around a good machine and worth the price.

5 Stars Schwinn 460 elliptical
So far this product has met or exceeded my expectation. Item arrived intact, no damage. Instructions made it easy to assemble. Took about two hours. Using the elliptical it works as described as well as the electronics. It seems to have been well built and I anticipate getting several years of use from it.

5 Stars Great Machine at a Great Price
I have had the 460 for about a month now. It is a wonderful machine to exercise on. My Wife and I use it at least once per day and we find that it is smooth and easy to use. The variable stride makes all the difference. We tried other Elliptical Trainers that do not have that feature and they were harder for my Wife to use, since she is only 5 feet tall.

Assembly of the machine took about three hours at an easy pace. It was not too complicated. It was comforting to me that all the complicated mechanisms and all the electronics were allready assembled. Therefore, really all “assembly” consisted of was to bolt the chasis together and bolt on the features. I downloaded the detailed assembly manual from [...].

The machine pedals stand about 8 inches off the ground. We found that an old 4 inch aerobic step next to the machine (“The Step” which we bought on Amazon) provided a great small step that makes the machine easier to use. “The Step” is the same color gray as the 460 and actually looks like it was designed to be used with it. It does not interfere with the pedals at all and it makes it much easier for my Wife to use.

I’d recommend the Schwinn 460 to anyone.

5 Stars Excellent Elliptical Machine !!!
On Sep 28, 2009, after careful thought and consideration of other machines/brands that I have seen at sporting good stores, fitness centers and studied via the web online, I went ahead and made the purchase for the Schwinn 460 Variable Stride Elliptical Trainer. What sold me was the many positive reviews, the variable stride feature, the 2″-26″ stride capability, price and reputation. This is a very well constructed and well thought out, engineered machine. I am a 45 year old male, in excellent physical fitness, weigh 155 lbs. @ 5′ 8″. Recently I have been having pain in my hips from street running. Not wanting to hinder my fitness routine, I decided that an elliptical machine may be the remedy. I received my Amazon order via lift truck and had it placed in my garage. The machine is WELL packed in its box. In fact, it took nearly 30 minuets to unpack it as the machine is very well protected inside. I brought the pieces inside one by one which was not much of a hassle as each piece was light enough to carry with the exception of the body. My daughter, 5’2″ 95 lbs was able to help me lift one end of it to get it in. The instructions were very easy to read and understand. With the exception of needing a 17mm socket and ratchet, you will not need any other tools. It took me 1 1/2 hour to get this machine fired up (it may take others longer who are not as equipped mechanically). Oh boy, was I pleased. After 4 days of using this machine, I am soooo happy that I made this choice. My hip pain has subsided and I am loving this new fitness machine. The LED touch screen display rocks and the programming is top notch. My daughter who attends a major university said that this machine is better than the elliptical machines they have in their fitness centers on campus! I highly recommend this to anyone who is thinking about an elliptical and cannot make up their minds. This is a great machine and an excellent buy! BTW: Schwinn Fitness is a brand of Nautilus who’s other brands include Bowflex, Stairmaster and others!

5 Stars Bang for the Buck
I purchased the Schwinn 431 about one month ago. I spent about 6 months researching before the purchase. I’m glad I did. Assembly was simple, but took about 4 hours. I was in no hurry. I probably took an hour of breaks during the process. The assembly was simple, but a little time consuming. My daughter, grand-daughter and I have used the machine about 2.5 hours per day since assembly.

It is comparable to the elliptical I used at the YMCA for years. The 25 lb flywheel makes it feel very stable. It is whisper quiet. The noise level is very low. I used lithium grease during assembly.

It’s a great exercise machine for a moderae price. I’d recommend it to my friends and family.

5 Stars Sturdy and Quiet
I have just set up my Schwinn 431 Elliptical Trainer and I love it already. It is really well made and feels sturdy and substantial. It runs smoothly with no background noise. My old Nordic Track was very noisy and shaky. The Schwinn takes up less space yet feels more solid. I don’t know how I will feel 6 months from now but so far it is well worth the money.

This elliptical trainer is great. I like how quiet and smooth it is, and it fits both my husband @ 5’8″ and myself at 5’1″ well. I would highly recommend it!

4 Stars Pleased
After owning a poor eliptical that had 3 major breakdowns (the Ignite 1841) I researched the Schwinn 431 and it has performed, to this point, very well. I am 210 lbs. so a sturdy drive wheel is necessary and this provides the smoothness that was desired. It performs very quietly. Unlike other reviews I read, the fan works fine I just choose not to use it. The real test of any fitness equipment is after a year of use, so I can only give it compliments to this point 2 months after use.

3 Stars Disappointed and Satisfied
My unit arrived with chipped paint and broken foot treads. A call to Nautilus and 8 days of waiting for the new parts resolved the treads issue and I decided to live with chipped paint.

A prior reviewer posted images of extra steps (tightening some screws) to help the unit operate quietly. I followed the recommendation and the section around the flywheel is quiet. The unit still makes one squeak on the right side roller track.

Another review commented on the stability of the unit. I agree the unit is stable until you reach 7 to 8 Mph. At around 7 Mph the unit does have some wobble. I have noticed that above 8 Mph the wobble seems to go away. Note my unit is sitting on top of 3/4 inch plywood pad to prevent damage to the carpet and provide stability.

While the construction of the unit is solid and I was impressed with the screws that connect all the moving parts (8mm by 20 and 8mm by 25), the heart rate handles and display are mounted with 4 small (3/4 inch by #6) screws. Clearly the designer did not plan on a legs only workout.

One more sad point. The fan on the unit is worthless. At best it creates a soothing hum. Do not count on the fan to cool you.

On the upside, the unit works. It is smooth and predictable. The motions are not strenuous and the machine works nearly every body part. The display and programs are useful and the heart rate monitor seems accurate (as measured against a separate Polar chest strap device).

Overall I am happy with the machine but I am not sure I would buy another Nautilus / Schwinn product. Poor shipping, bad packaging, and poor quality control are deterrents for me. While the Nautilus customer support was awesome, I should not have needed to call.

5 Stars Schwinn 430 Elliptical – Great Value
I bought the Schwinn 430 Elliptical a month ago from Amazon (the same time as a Schwinn 230 recumbent bike) and I am VERY happy with Amazon, with the shipping co. and with the Schwinn 430 Elliptical itself.

My experience:

1. Schwinn 430 Elliptical arrived at my house about ten days after ordering

2. Unpack and assembly took 90 minutes – do follow the instructions carefully – they are well written, but there are a couple of steps where you must read closely and match the screw/bolt/locking washers to the assembly instruction steps. The parts package is clearly labeled with sizes and assembly part #

3. I have now worked out on the Schwinn 430 Elliptical five times using different programs at Level 8 for 30 mins and my initial experience is: quiet, nice display, clear controls on the display and got my HR to 130 range which is almost where I want it. 135 HR is about right for me.

4. The build quality is just fine and the main area I see for possible failure is the touch-press control panel – if sub-par plastic membrane material is used it can lead to possible issues.

I recommend the Schwinn 430 Elliptical as a strong buy, with the caveat that you must follow the assembly steps patiently and diligently.

5 Stars I love this elliptical!
I could not be happier with this elliptical. The motion is smooth and quite, better than the models I have used at the gym. The unit feels sturdy and well built. I have rhuematoid arthritis and this machine gives me the low-impact smooth workout I need to stay fit. The unit is big enough to feel steady but still compact enough to fit in my bedroom. I am 5’2″ tall and the reach on this machine is fine for me, I feel quite comfortable with every aspect of the elliptical. Well worth the price.

5 Stars Good Machine for the Price
I purchased this recently and just got it. Its overwhelming at 1st all the parts and the pieces. I live in an upstairs condo and was really worried about getting it up the stairs but someone suggested taking it out of the box and carry it up in pieces. That was the best idea. We had to make a few more trips but it was so easy. Granted the main piece and biggest piece are still heavy but it was a great idea.

I am female and it took me about 2 1/2 hours to put it together. I esp had some trouble with one of the bolts on the Right Handle. Not sure what the deal was.

I felt the pieces (ie the bolts) could have been labeled a little differently. They weren’t labeled exactly how they were listed in the assembly manual. But I managed.

I too had trouble with the squeaking. But I got back online and reviewed the reviews and did what they said and loosened the bolds on the arms that are connected to the piece that goes through the mast and that seemed to take care of it. However I haven’t offically used it for longer than 15 mins yet so I have yet to test it out fully. But it seem to make the squeak within a min or two and its not doing it now.

I am amazed how quickly it gets your heartrate up. So I think this machine will provide a great cardio workout can’t wait to put it to the test. But so far very pleased.

I would recommend the mat for underneth it. It helps even for just moving the machine if need be.

First off I want to say that the main factor in purchasing this elliptical over the plethora of others on the market was the overwhelmingly positive feedback it received here on Amazon. Therefore I feel it’s my responsibility to contribute my own $.02

Purchasing from Amazon

Amazon had the best price plus free shipping. I was really surprised by how quickly this item was shipped out. I received it in via freight delivery service in under a week. Please note that this freight service is only obligate to bring this to your door. I wasn’t home at the time of delivery but my gf gave the lone delivery a $10 for taking it up to my 2nd floor apt.

Assembly

It really wasn’t that difficult at all. You just have to have some patience. I started off by carefully taking all the equipment out of the box (wasn’t that easy) and laying it out. The assembly is really straightforward. I found the manual to be more than competent. Like other reviewers mentioned I used the white lithium grease to lube the moving parts. You will be able to easily identify these parts since they are already sent lubricated by the manufacturer. A few people on here gave the product terrible reviews because some of the pieces were wrong or broken. I didn’t have this problem.

Using the elliptical

This machine is really sturdy and well built. It runs very quietly and smoothly. Surprisingly the resistance works very well. After using it for 30 minutes I was totally exhausted! In case you’re curious I’m 5’9″ and 195 lbs. I feel that if I were over 6′ the stride may feel a bit too short but for me it’s fine.

Negatives

The only negatives I can come up with is the fact that LED screen does not have a backlight and the part where you put your feet on is made of plastic and doesn’t have rubber grips. The problem with that is my feet consistently come off the foot pad a bit which makes a little noise. As you can see from my review it’s a pretty minor complaint.
